Monthly RP Event (OOC Discussion)

Postby Loreli » Thu Sep 29, 2011 12:41 pm

There was some discussion shortly after Feathermeet in regards to a second RP night. Attendance on Tuesdays has been sort of touch and go and I understand people are busy, stressed, burned out, have left the game. We also have people who are unable to attend the Tuesday night RP sessions. So here’s my thought, once a month, I’m going to try to organize an RP event. My guess is it will probably be a on a weekend, thought that's up to discussion. I’m hoping with enough advanced notice people who want to attend can plan around the event.

I’m not planning to aim for any broad sweeping story lines to start off with. First meeting or so we’ll probably just shoot the breeze, get to know each other, again or for the first time. I’d also like to hold at least some of these events outside the Pig. Even outside Stormwind. That will probably be something to tackle is we bring plots into the mix.

The start of every month I will update this thread asking people to suggest days and times that they expect will work well for them for the following month. I’ll try to give at least a week’s notice of the time of the event.
As we move further into the events, I’d like to open it up to a different story-teller each month to give us the lead. Obviously if no one had anything we can just sit around and BS or I can try to throw something together.

Now I’d like to open up to a little discussion:

Tell me, what are you looking for in RP? What do you hope to accomplish? Do you have a story line you’d really like to get going and bring others in on? What’s your thing? Are you mostly a fic write who’s a little shy of in game RP? Are you looking for more people to collaborate on fics with? Do you want to help others with their own plots? Do you like in game events? Do you want to help organize in game events? Do you just like sitting around chatting in character? Is there something you want that I completely missed?
"A little extra DPS never killed anyon... Oh wait."
"Still alive, I see. Clearly you're not trying hard enough."

Part of the problem I am having Aside is that the two characters that have history are

Cylinn: Dumber than a box of rocks. I can play her for short periods of time, but she is so off type for me that I start to feel my brain dribble out of my skull after awhile.

Tarelyn: With all the things that have happened with her over the past six years, Tarelyn has become a loner. She keeps people at arm's reach. Except for Threnn and Bricu, because they don't allow it. Nearly everyone else she knows is dead, or don't know her well. (Or Cylinn, who is a perpetual ten year old).

Quilque ended up on the wrong side of the Maunt RP storyline and I will be playing her more since Ghaar will be playing Giert more.

My squid mage is gone, deleted a long time ago and my druid has no personality to speak of. So essentially, I am left with an idiot and a loner.

Long-overdue thoughts on this:

Everyone knows how my plots have been going (or not going) for a while, and while there's still wheels turning on the Lotus storyline, I'm just in favor of an open RP environment. Whatever's percolating in the background doesn't have to drive everything so much as provide a framework. I'm also interested in exploring avenues that can open things up in the Pig a little - bring in more non-guildies from time to time, and present a welcoming environment. After all, it's no fun being the bad guys if there's no good guys around, right?

Proposal: a monthly Charity Poker Tournament, using the Anzac Hold-Em addon, with all "profits" being donated to...IDK, a fund for Gilnean refugees or Cataclysm orphans or victims of Gnomeregan Poisoning. (There shouldn't be any actual ingame money changing hands, as I believe Blizzard banned people for gambling with the original version of that addon.) People playing cards, drinking, and if "business" needs to happen we can take it upstairs or down into the basement. It'd take a little bit to figure out signups for the actual poker games but I'm sure if lots of people are actually interested we can come up with a rotation or something. These could definitely happen outside of the Pig as well.

As far as discussion questions go, I'd like to continue pushing the Lotus plot along in the background - it's more of a representation of how the world is changing around our characters (especially the more medieval-minded ones like Tarq), but that doesn't mean there's not cool plot shit that could happen. Beyond that, I mostly just want to get my RPz on more often. :) It's a lot of fun and you guys are neat. Ingame events seem like a good way to do that.
Now hang me by this golden noose
'Cause I never been nothin' but your golden goose
Silver tongue don't fail me now
And I'll make my way back to you somehow

Lore and I talked about this last week. The first game--to set the stage--begins tomorrow. I think just getting a game together will be a small step towards getting more people into RPing regularly again.

Weekends are iffy for me -- most Saturday nights are right out, but if I have advance notice of a Friday or a Sunday, I can try to be around.

I'm mostly looking for good IC interactions with people. I have a couple of plotlines I need to get off my ass and move along, but a lot of that requires myself and others carving out time to do the background work on there. I like a mix of fic and in-game, though my time for ficcing has gone down drastically. Still trying to build that back up. Who needs sleep, right? XD

I'm happy to help other people with plots. Not sure I have the brain power to run/organize an in-game event right now, but I'm willing to help where I can.

Well, as I'm sure everyone's aware, my main problem/concern is the timezone differences. Normally the times I'm able to be around when other people are playing are Friday and Saturday afternoons/evenings (servertime), which doesn't leave a lot of option. I do enjoy hitting the regular P&W RP nights, but taking time off work to hit ingame events is not really all that feasible.

Like I've raised with others before, I'd be more than willing to ensure I'm about for irregular RP nights/gatherments if I had some sort of prior warning and reassurance things would be happening. As much as I <3 you guys, getting up unhungover at 8am or so on a Saturday or Sunday morning is a commitment. And taking time out of work to be around for a Tuesday night RP night is even more of a commitment, if I'm not sick. It doesn't have to be a regular, reoccurring thing - I'd just like more opportunities to "be around".

One of the things I wish I could change is that due to the time restrictions, I and Illi miss out on a lot that goes on. Plots/RP ideas get floated, and while I'm usually keen as anyone else, I can't make anything. There's only so much you can do with offline prose. It means that plots come and go without being aware of what's going on (WTF was that Maunt thing anyhow?), and it means that I get little chance to see Illi develop as a personality, let alone any of my alts' RP. You can't really RP in a vacuum (well, you can, but that's more alone private personal time and I'm not entirely sure you guys want me to talk about that).

Anyhow. That's my two copper, which read more as an epic whine-fest. But as a tl;dr - my voting issue is timing so that I can participate, I fully support RP nights/plots which can be scheduled so that I can participate, with a little prior warning for scheduling.
I am become Illithias, Destroyer of Worlds.

The maunt thing was a thing. A huge thing that Bricu and Threnn browbeat me unmercifully to be a part of. (Okay, that last thing was a lie)

I'm also in favor of more open RP, and the poker nights sound great for example. Tuesday nights would be a good time to try and draw more people in. I think getting further into Cata, there's probably more people who are bored with the content and might be looking for more RP. Just a theory, I'm not sure if it holds water or not. It is true for me, at least, that there's a lot of times when I don't feel like leveling or doing more dailies. To be honest, RP is the main reason why I still play WoW, although this PvP thing is some good fun too.

Work schedules and time zones make things harder for me, since I work weekends/holidays and live on the east coast. I think I'm in a similar situation to Illi sometimes there, although not quite so drastic. And some days, work shenanigans are bad enough that I don't want to log in, and I can't predict when that happens. That does make it hard to be a part of big plotlines, which I do love. But work and RL is why Kyr functions better as what she is, a more peripheral type of character. I think I've got a good balance of RL and game, anyway. There's a couple plotlines I've done that involve fic, and since I really need to get into the habit of writing more, those have been some of the most fun. More than willing to help with plotlines, but not run them- I'm kicking up the job search again, and with novel writing month coming up plus ongoing PT and other things with the leg thing, RL is pretty full right now. I'm hoping that will change in the future.

Just a few quick notes and then I'll go back over everyone's responses in a bit more depth.

The point of this is definitely to enable people like Illi to be able to get involved in more stuff, so I will be aiming at times when he and others can make it. There will be warning ahead of time. Not sure if we'll get an event going this month but I'm definitely aiming to get things rolling next month.
