The Tropes Thread

Postby Tarq » Sun Mar 25, 2012 11:15 pm

I know we've done this a couple times before, but, what the hell, I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

For those who don't know, TVTropes is a wiki that collects, defines and indexes storytelling & character devices. It's great fun, and I've found lately that it can be a good way to discover things about characters and stories that you never really thought about. So, I thought I'd start a new thread to post and discuss tropes for each other's characters (and our own). I'll probably be editing this opening post to be an index of them in one place.

I'll start off with a few general guild ones for tonight. More later.

The Wildfire Riders
Anti Heroes (Types 2-4) & Anti Villains (Types 1-2): both self-explanatory.
Bad Guy Bar: the Pig & Whistle
Equal-Opportunity Evil: well, they're pretty diverse!
Honor Among Thieves: a bit dodgy, sure, but they watch out for each other.
Neighborhood Friendly Gangsters: ...and for Old Town as well.
Private Military Contractors: the foundation of the business.

Have at it, kids. I'll probably add a few character-specific ones tonight.
Now hang me by this golden noose
'Cause I never been nothin' but your golden goose
Silver tongue don't fail me now
And I'll make my way back to you somehow

As promised, a few character-specific tropes. Not that I think about this stuff a lot or anything.

The current officership makes for a pretty cromulent Five Bad Band.
Tarquin is, of course, the Boss.
Bricu gets shit done.
Annalea schemes and sorts.
Chryste does violence.
Threnn keeps them grounded in reality.
And Ulthanon is the idea man. (Also, lol.)

Tarquin and Bricu have a pretty well-developed leadership style.

Threnn has her work cut out for her. And that sister of hers isn't any help.

Loreli and Kyraine work well together lately. And when you add Illithias to the mix...good times.

Underestimate Duugvilder at your own peril.

When things get real, Chryste slips her leash. When they get unreal, Yva goes to work.

(With some help from Tarquin, and liable to be updated...)

With liberal use of the Hammer of What the FUCK were you thinking, Aely's not afraid to be the Token Good Teammate. It comes with the combination of paladin and redhead. Also, she's highly effective as a combat medic, and quite good with a mace.

Kyraine's career choice after she left Gilneas before the Wall went up. But lately, she's been having issues.

Then there's Blue. And the retired, but still nasty Bastard the horse. Probably Mutiny too, even if she is a dragon.

I'd also like to add that Aely has a bit of a brutal past. Regardless, damn.

Kyraine might have some hints of consciencethat make her uncomfortable with a life of crime, but, you know, she's pretty goddamn good at the violence end. The resulting dichotomy, I'm sure, helps her temper not at all.
