The Maelstrom loomed ahead, a veritable wall of black clouds and hail, churning with a rage unabated since the Cataclysm. Its outer cloudwall took up most of the horizon.

They can't ever find you. You're gonna have to go dry...

That's impossible!

Despite the darkness of both sea and sky, a light caught his eye from beneath the waves. A red glow; a fire, lit somehow even underwater. It seemed familiar to him, somehow.

Forget what?

Everything.

Three more lights sparked into existence; one blue, which hovered near the red; and two green. These were farther away, much deeper than either of the first two, and they were faint from distance. They circled each other in very tight orbits.
His vision suddenly lurched, screaming forward and down, under the waves to the two green lights, sickly green in their glow. In naught but a second split he had traversed the leagues and leagues to their location, where the depth of the sea redefined the meaning of darkness; but even as his eyes failed him, he could see in a final flash of understanding that the fires were not simply fires, but eyes.

Eyes that saw.
