I think that's one of the aspects why I'm considering the "multi-classing" - of all the classes/specs out there, a Fury warrior and a Combat rogue are probably the closest to one another. They're both "magic-less" melee fighters. Really, the only differences seem to be the size of the weapons in their hands and the thickness of their armour.

I can't think of much about a rogue that I'd go "Oh, that doesn't suit/fit with Illi at all." Unless I'm looking at it with bias and others do not agree.

The only major difference is poisons. Especially since Nelves get shadowform, so the stealth aspect goes from "Ok, I can hide in this bush rather reliably" to "Ok, I can hide in plain sight and move around alot!".

Other than that it's a bigger bag of tricks. Which can be RP'd out by saying something like "Why can't I blind/vanish/poison my weapons while wearing heavy armor? Tell me this: have you ever seen plate armor with pockets?"

Well, Illi's a Herbalist and an Alchemist - making up weapon poisons isn't that much of a stretch of the imagination.

Functionally, the only real differences between Fury Warriors and Combat Rogues are:

-Rogues can sneak around.
-Warriors can eat more pain.

There's also smaller game-mechanic stuff, of course, but for the most part it's the above to put in perspective. It mostly boils down to the type of armor Illi'd be wearing in each role, which basically defines the different up-sides. I don't find it particularly hard to imagine a character like Illi doing both of those jobs, but the only snare is that, in terms of gameplay, they're still technically totally different characters with a different set of achievements, gear, etc., which might not be a bother to some, but to others might jeopardize the sense of immersion and the suspension of disbelief required to see both game characters as the same RP character.

Now, another option exists that, if you go Illi-rogue and decide you like it so much you want to stick with it, you could always go back and recustomize the Warrior later into somebody totally new, which could be great fun if you're feeling so inspired.

This is the main make-or-break for it IMO, though for me it's usually in terms of actual abilities. For instance, a Rogue can't charge, but a Warrior can. It doesn't make sense from a character's point of view, unless they had selective amnesia of a sort.

But hey, it's possibly worth a shot.

Kind of a crappy answer I use is guilds. Each class has it's own guild structure and you get in trouble for doing something outside that structure while working as whatever class you are playing. This raises a whole series of other questions about how those guilds came into power and how they enforce that structure on the many different races who were not even all on the planet until recently, but it for me at least solves the whole "Why can't I do this now?" question. And opens up some good rp channels to work in if you can find others willing to go along with that story. There is also the option of just saying that in your written RP you can always do these things and can (within reason and with others permissions) play out that you have abilities from all your classes while rping along with someone.

I see "fighting style" as being a huge player in this. You can't be all holy power and loud when your combat training revolves around stealth or ranged attacks. Its not a perfect explanation, but it can work.

Another factor has to be execution: how do you RP the changes?

Different Gear Loadouts, cake.

I think multiclassing can work, as long as it isn't an our of character for that person to do. I plan on doing the same thing for Tif the Hunter Alt in Cata, and he isn't going to have a pet RPly, he isn't going to have any of the benefits of a hunter aside from letting me as a player realize a part of the character that I already have, which is mostly shooting people. It also ties into part of the Technosoldier concept, so there's that.

I'd say it's less about the combat RP aspect, and far more about the noncombat RP aspect. Bricu brought up the mounts, achievements, etc, but I know what made the Bell-hunter concept completely fall apart was sitting in RP night with Hunter Bell and being in a situation where by all means, she would have changed form, but couldn't. It felt really clunky and godmodey to RP her being able to do that with a two ton Omen-corehound at her side... and I wasn't about to go 'brb' and pull on a character version with an advantage in the situation when I was in it with Hunter-bell. The RP use of Bellesta's animal forms made it so the Hunter version so rarely showed up, which made me decide it was the perfect candidate for Re-tooling into Taloran... even though Taloran apparently decided he didn't fit the hunter class and is being leveled as a warrior. >_>
