Ok, so. I have a new problem. No longer are my tubes only kicking me off during 25 man boss fights, but now this damn machine is kicking me off sporadically just browsing the internet. Sometimes it'll take two minutes, other times it'll take ten. The connection can die when I'm not even browsing (when the comp is doing nothing, or playing WOW, for instance). I suspect it's my antivirus and firewall (Norton/Symantec, which I hate anyway), but I can't isolate it.

This is now a problem, because I want my Noblegarden meta, but I can't do it on unpredictable four-minute bursts.

I do know its not my ISP; I hooked my cable to my laptop, killed the laptop's wireless, and got normally functioning internet.

What info do I need to provide for someone who's more tech savvy than myself to fix this?

My first instinct for ya is that it's your network card starting to go. As for tech savvyness, I'm not very, but I do know network cards are pretty cheap - at least, the non-wireless kind.

It could also be your router. Mine is going, and it's slowly increasing in its reset frequency - I'm up to 3-5 times every day now that the internet just flat quits until I reboot the router, and then it works fine.

Might be router, I know I was disconnecting multiple times a day on my old old old old linksys router towards the end of its life. I didn't know it was the router at the time, but when someone suggested that I get a new router, it instantly fixed not only my disconnect problems, but I got 100 less ping in game.

It could also be the card, or your antivirus/firewall software.

Network Card- alright, I'll have to check that out. I don't actually use a router, I just plug directly into my building's cable wall jack, so, yeah. I'll swing up to a Best Buy or something and ask them about it.

Are you having the same disconnect problems when you use your laptop? I don't remember if your place has wifi or not: IF it does, does your iPod touch have the same issues?


it can be something as simple as the network card or it can be the firewall. You may need a crossover cable (unless XP and your network card do this automatically) but try plugging the ethernet cable from your computer into your laptop and see if you can sustain a connection that way by transferring over files.

What's your bandwidth situation like? Can you connect a bandwidth meter and see what youre getting? Is it consistent over time or are there huge drops in it?

My laptop typically picks up wireless without problem, and when I turned wireless off and used my caple thats typically plugged into my desktop, it got internet again without problem. My iTouch picks up said wireles without issue.

My firewall is... difficult. My Symantec software is somewhere between the versions that are covered by support guides? Sooo I'm not exactly sure how to turn of my firewall. I've spent many an hour trying to do this, and uh... I can't.

It is my understanding of Firewall software that symantec sucks. Can't you uninstall it and find an alternative?
