Blizzard is holding an Open Beta for Diablo 3 this weekend from noon (PDT) today (April 20th) until 10am (PDT) Monday morning. So if you haven't gotten a regular beta invite yet, now is a great chance to log in and play.

From all indications, character names are not unique as most of the communication/social interaction is done at the BattleTag level and character names are secondary to that. So one could theoretically fill all 10 character slots with themed names without worrying that they'll be taken.
