Spiders and Flies (A corrollary to The Model Emplyee)

Post by Jhoryla »

((Posting with permission from a few people. It's short, and I apologize for any errors due to the haste it was written, but here we go. :) ))

The story was over. The tale was through.

What should have ended however, did not.

It should have ended at the witch's gift.

A lone candle lit the small flat. About the small woman a dozen books, relics and artifacts lay cluttered about in haphazard fashion. She sat in the middle of it all, hunched over, her bright violet eyes peering into the depths of an old text, her fingers turning dry withered pages. She studied it with care, for within this thick tome lay a thousand answers, a thousand words of power. A tome for whom many had died, and many more had fallen, in the effort to obtain it.

A Book of Fel Names.

She paused, a single finger moving to trace a name in the fel lexicon. A word of interest. But not the word she sought. Still, it echoed in her mind.

Jhoryla...

All names had power, all names granted a certain level of control. Knowing someone's name told you something about them, it gave you a measure of authority. Yet the Book of Fel Names was more than just a catalog. It told you the name, but more importantly, how the name was to be used. How to vocalize and invoke the name. Further, the book was for all intents inclusive. And yet, the name she sought, the name she had looked for so diligently, appeared nowhere in the text.

Thoughts became words and Jhoryla uttered it out loud.

"Narsh'zaran."

It was a name to which she had no memory. A name of a thing that had somehow managed to render a creature of terrible power addled, confused, and afraid. A name missing from the book, from any and all of her books.

"Narsh'zaran."

She withdrew the stone, her cure, from its resting place on the floor. The sigil that sealed it, that bound its magic, that too was a mystery.

Questions with no answers.

It was a dangerous place to be when dealing with any of her kind. Jhoryla snapped the book shut, looking thoroughly disgusted, her nose wrinkling in disapproval at the whole situation. She slid the book from her lap and stood, resting her hands on her hips, wracking her mind with the events that had transpired the day before.

"It was so easy," Yva Darrows had said. Too easy. Narsh'zaran didn't seem especially clever, but he was certainly powerful. When Yva's icy hands had touched Jhoryla's, they sent a bolt of raw energy so powerful that it had nearly thrown Jhoryla from her place on the bench and into the cobblestone below.

"Of course it was easy!" Jhoryla snapped in the direction of Ripley. The tabby jumped, skittering off into her bedroom. Jhoryla sighed.

Yva hadn't given in of course. She was stubborn, and prideful, and here it played to her advantage. But Narsh'zaran was clearly stubborn and prideful as well. More to the point, he was finally understanding the game, and how to play.

GIve them something first, offer them something later.

"Who are you? And -why- do you want her?" Jhoryla asked. There could be a dozen different responses to either, and all of them plausible. Yva wasn't helping either. Jhoryla knew some of what had happened, but the story was far from complete, and the witch seemed hesitant to reveal everything.

Well, the tomes won't tell you anything. And you can't remember the name. No sense in wasting time here.

She had hoped for an easy solution, but now things would be murkier. She'd have to find out what Jak knew.

And I'll have to find Khaleese.

The thought made her cringe.

A Few Starting Words of Advice

"It's just frustrating is all."

Jhoryla blew a stray strand of black hair from her face as she slumped forward, thrumming her fingers against the old stained oak table.

"You know if I knew something, I'd tell you. I've never heard the name either," Ekrem fished his pipe from a plain brown vest, taking a moment to stuff it with tobacco. He casually brought it to his lips, lighting it with a snap of his fingers. "I'm sorry you're frustrated, but there may be little you can do right now."

The Beer Garden was all but deserted, except for a single waitress. It was a venue designed for somewhat larger affairs, an offshoot nook from the main Hero's Welcome parlor. There was likely less business than the dwarves who undoubtedly requested the facility would have hoped for, but in a city of mages, that wasn't entirely unexpected. Ekrem took a slow drag from his pipe, tapping his chin in thought.

"Narsh'zaran," he said, releasing a haze of smoke into the air.

"Sounds like a Nathrezim, if you ask me," Jhoryla was quick to respond. She shifted, moving to escape the cloud of thick pipe fumes as it drifted in her direction.

"It would fit the motif of behavior, would it not?"

"Oh sure, Narsh'zaran, Nathrezim. N to N, makes sense," Jhoryla replied, bobbing her head in a sing song manner.

Ekrem smirked.

"And you know nothing of his motivation, what he wants?"

Jhoryla rolled her eyes. "Well he wants her, clearly."

"Clearly. But you don't know what his full agenda is."

"Well no, if I knew that..." Jhoryla trailed off. "I really need to find Jak. I'm sure he can pry something out of her that I can't."

"Jak?" Ekrem raises an eyebrow, "Oh, that's her paramour?" He took another drag from his pipe, holding his lips together to form a small hoop of smoke as he exhaled.

"That's a nice trick."

"I thought so."

"And yeah, Jak's her well, yeah. I mean, he may know more than me already, I have no idea." Jhoryla paused, scrunching her face up. "This was so much easier when I actually worked for them y'know. Hunting down something from within seems simpler than hunting it from without. Does that make any sense?"

"No."

"Well screw you too warlock." Jhoryla grumbled. "Anyway, there's always Khaleese."

"Who?" Ekrem asked as he brought the pipe to the side of the table to clear the ashes.

"She's an old contact of mine from the inside, knows pretty much everyone," Jhoryla said this with some venom.

"You don't sound especially pleased with the thought of it," Ekrem said.

"Well no she's a royal bitch. And besides," Jhoryla sat straight up, staring the warlock in the eyes, "the sort of information from her always comes at a price, and not a pleasant one."

Ekrem slipped a hand into his vest, withdrawing his pocketwatch. He flipped it open, scrutenizing the arrowhands and then managed a yawn. "You thought the same of Miss Darrows and that didn't turn out so badly did it?"

"Khaleese is -not- Yva. And there was a price for that too, it just happened to be one I liked." Jhoryla retorted. "Y'know if we could find out what linked the bastard to her, we could probably use it to summon his sorry ass through, make quick work of him," Jhoryla said suddenly, her eyes brightening with the thought.

"And who pray tell will perform the summon? Miss Darrows? I wouldn't be surprised if that fell into Narsh'zaran's plans at some point," Ekrem shook his head. "Really Jhoryla..."

"Not her! You!" Jhoryla snapped back.

"I'm retired." Ekrem sneered.

"Oh? Is that why you're here in Dalaran? Retirement?" Jhoryla gave him an accusing look, folding her arms over her chest.

"A retired man may do as he pleases, thank you." Ekrem did his best to sound imperious.

"I think you're just trying to impress Rain, old man. She -is- cute." Jhoryla began to giggle. Ekrem scowled.

"Quiet," he muttered.

"What was that? You and pretty girls, really! You're worse than me, and I'm a bloody..."

"Jhoryla! Really!" Ekrem interupted. "Do you honestly think I'm after every pretty thing on two legs! That's your territory!" Ekrem growled, returning the pipe to his lips.

"Uh huh. Sure it is. And I bet you didn't feel so old when she bent over to draw Wraagy. How was the view anyway?" Jhoryla giggled out, winking over at the warlock. He started, hacking up smoke.

"Damnit..." he wheezed. "That's enough!"

Silence followed for a time, neither of them saying anything. Ekrem replaced the pipe back into the vest, thoroughly vexed with the thing, and the woman that sat across from him. Jhoryla began to hum, Yva's song, as she found herself prone to do more often than not lately. Finally, Ekrem spoke up.

"Tanaris."

"What about it?" Jhoryla glanced at him, looking a little confused.

"You wanted to take a holiday there, did you not?"

"Well yeah, but that's not going to happen now," Jhoryla said, sighing with some disdain. "I'm just too busy. Too distracted."

"Jhoryla, sometimes the best way to resolve a problem is to step away from it for a while. A few days might clear your thoughts, give you some time to think. Certainly Yva's not going anywhere, and I doubt she'll fall prey to this character tomorrow." Ekrem smiled.

"Hmmm." Jhoryal narrowed her eyes. "Y'know, you might be right."

"I think I am," Ekrem added, looking triumphant. "A little relaxation would do you good. After everything you've been through, especially."

"Not as much as her Eks, not as much as her." Jhoryla sighed.

"She's strong enough to handle this. Trust me, I've felt her frostbolts." Ekrem smiled.

"Just don't embarrass yourself while I'm gone old man. Rain's an important person y'know." Jhoryla sniggered, moving to her feet.

"Don't worry about me. I'm harmless." Ekrem chuckled. Jhoryla gaffawed.

"Uh huh, as harmless as me."
